Lempuyang Temple Gate To Heaven
Lempuyang Temple, officially known as Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of Bali’s oldest and most highly regarded temples. It is located on the slope of Mount Lempuyang in the Karangasem Regency, East Bali. This temple complex comprises seven sanctuaries along the ascending path to the mountain’s peak, with the highest and most sacred being Pura Lempuyang Luhur, situated at approximately 1,060 meters above sea level.
Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang, the first temple encountered on the ascent, is particularly famous for its towering white “Gates of Heaven” (Candi Bentar). These split gates offer a dramatic frame for the view of Mount Agung in the distance, making it a very popular spot for photographs. The architecture throughout the Lempuyang complex is distinctly Balinese, featuring intricate carvings, dragon-guarded staircases, and various shrines and pavilions.
As one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagad, or “six sanctuaries of the world,” Lempuyang Temple holds significant spiritual importance for the Balinese people. It is considered one of the directional temples, specifically representing the east and associated with the deity Iswara. Visiting the higher temples involves a climb of over 1,700 steps, which is considered a spiritual journey and a form of purification by locals. It’s important to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, and women who are menstruating are not permitted to enter.
The temple is not just a historical and religious site but also offers stunning natural scenery. The views from various points along the mountain, especially of Mount Agung, are breathtaking. While the “Gates of Heaven” are a major draw for tourists, the entire Lempuyang complex provides a deeper insight into Balinese spirituality, culture, and the island’s natural beauty.
